Abstract
In this paper, a nonlinear sliding mode observer is developed to estimate average aggregate volume and density of traffic flow along a highway, given loop detector measurements. The design is based upon an established dynamic model of traffic flow. Numerical experiments with traffic data collected from the Highway 401 in Toronto, Canada, show the proposed observer provides modestly improved performance and less sensitivity to model parameters than an extended Kalman filter
