Abstract
Broadband digital optical fiber networks could become the ideal transmission medium for high definition television HDTV. In addition to high bit rates, a broadband network should provide the service flexibility and the customizable switching features desired for a large array of image-based services. The authors describe research to realize a complete experimental HDTV coder and decoder, including SONET/ATM interfaces, as a transport system for digital broadband networks. The research includes the set of experimental VLSI (very large scale integrated circuits) needed for initial HDTV systems experiments
