Abstract
Here we present transient absorption studies of a common conjugated polymer component used in organic solar cells, P3HT, which suggests that at least partly, light absorption in the polymer layer leads to the direct formation of free charges much like that in silicon. The mechanism for free charge formation in P3HT shall be discussed along with a comparison of P3HT with traditional silicon devices to explain their up to now poor sunlight conversion efficiencies.
