Abstract
Here we present a biomedical system for blood cell counting, based on micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) technology, designed and realized to obtain portability and low consumptions. The system consists of an assembly of three distinct parts: a micro electro-fluidic lab-on-a-chip (LOC), a mechanical-fluidic interface (MFI) and an electronic board (EB). LOC, realized in two versions, features a novel kind of parallel, multiple channel Coulter cell counter. MFI consists of a plastic holder for fluidic coupling and electrical connection to an EB, hosting all the electronics for cell counting. Preliminary experiments achieved proper fluidic working (absence of clogging, electrode stability, watertight coupling) and the proof-of-concept for combined electro-optical counting.
