  • Abstract
This paper presents a new method to improve the accuracy of fault location algorithms by accounting for the shunt admittance without the requirement of any parameters. Typically, most fault location algorithms either neglect the effect of shunt admittance in the estimation of distance to fault or make use of pre-calculated parameters. The accuracy of fault location can be significantly improved by accounting for this factor. However, settings for line parameters are not exact and vary with weather and loading conditions. A settings free approach to fault location is more reliable and truly accurate. Using the method proposed in this paper, the shunt admittance of the line can be accounted for in fault location algorithms using synchronized measurements from both ends of the line. This general method can be applied to a number of existing fault location algorithms.
