Abstract
Summary form only given. Equipment supporting dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) has seen widespread deployment in recent years. With the introduction of wavelength add/drop capability to these systems, coupled with the introduction of optical network elements with ¿nodal¿ features-such as optical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) and optical crossconnects (0XCs)-the ability to add, drop, and in effect construct wavelength-switched and wavelength-routed networks will quickly emerge, as will the often heralded age of Optical Networking. This will present an attractive opportunity to design survivable optical WDM network architectures.
