Abstract
Numerous technical and competitive forces are driving the redefinition of access networks around the world, but technology choices and economic challenges create a complex maze of options. We review the driving forces, issues, and technologies involved, drawing specific comparison between wireless (fixed and mobile) and wireline alternatives.
