Abstract :
An electrode arrangement in compressed SF6 was studied to verify its applicability as a precise voltage chopping device under standard lightning impulse for testing purposes. The effect of irradiation of the chopping gap and the application of a low DC sweeping voltage on the gap breakdown voltage dispersion under a standard lightning impulse was also studied. The results obtained show that the effect of irradiation and the DC sweeping voltage for the configuration and pressure tested was practically negligible, leaving the electrode conditioning as the most important factor to be taken into account when considering the utilization of this electrode arrangement as a chopping gap for standard lightning impulse chopping at the crest
