    The paper discusses the implications and difficulties of running large-scale online applications, drawing on the extensive experience of the On-line Applications group at The Open University. The history of online services at The Open University is given, with the main advantages the University has reaped through its use of computer mediated communication. A series of success factors are offered that are applicable to managing large-scale online systems
