Abstract
An overview of the applicability of current optical network monitoring technologies is given. It is shown that these technologies are not well suited to fault analysis and location in the next generation of highly transparent dynamically switched optical networks. A new monitoring method, based on heterodyne detection is also described. This method enables information about the phase of the optical field to be extracted.
