Abstract
An integrated artificial intelligence environment for industrial expert systems geared toward practical operations is introduced. In terms of hardware, the AI environment comprises a process computer, an AI processor based on the RISC architecture with hardware extensions for AI languages, and an engineering workstation. Each component plays its part in close cooperation with the whole system. The end results is an ideal AI environment. In terms of software, a compiler-oriented approach is taken for both the expert system development tool and Lisp system. This allows high-speed inference with only a small memory requirement at run time. Performance estimation has revealed that the AI environment provides a sevenfold increase in execution speed over a process computer alone
