Abstract :
Millimeter-wave backscatter measurements of snowcover using a 225 GHz polarimetric radar were made between 25" and 80" incidence, along with in situ measurements of gravimetric liquid water content, snow density, surface roughness, and particle size. A two parameter model was developed for snowcover consisting of near spherical ice crystals. Measured data at 225 GHz is shown to agree with this model for isotropic snowcover. Fresh snowcover consisting of nonspherical crystals exhibits an anisotropic behavior that is not predicted with this model.
