  • Abstract
The effectiveness of left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) is investigated by using a pulsatile digital simulator of a cardiovascular/LVAD system, which takes advantage of a computer-aided design of control systems (CADCS) package. The simulation experiments show that, in case of reduced contractility of the natural left ventricle (LV), the insertion of a LVAD substantially increases the perfusion/energy-consumption ratio. In particular, myocardial perfusion and myocardial energy consumption are strongly influenced by the LVAD-LV delay and they reach optimal values when the LVAD works in counterpulsation.<>
