  • Abstract
The recent release of two Swedish epidemiological studies correlating residential and occupational magnetic field exposures with certain cancers has strengthened the hypothesis that high voltage power delivery can increase the incidence of cancer. The studies have received wide television, radio, and newsmedia attention, and can be expected to influence public and governmental attitudes regarding residential and occupational 60-Hertz (Hz) magnetic field exposures. Although no significant body of convincing laboratory evidence has emerged to firmly establish a connection between 60-Hz magnetic fields and human health hazards, an intense, international research effort is in progress and efforts are underway to assemble, from often conflicting research results, a set of general safety standards for 60-Hz magnetic field exposure. The authors focus in detail on research into possible biological effects of 60-Hz magnetic fields and the status of the search for a set of exposure standards.
