Abstract
Underwater gliders with a diving capability to 1000 m provide a new tool with which to make physical measurements to aid our understanding of processes in the ocean. Prior to experiments designed to observe deep convection, we carried out a series of trials using three 1000 m Slocum electric gliders. Here we report on the performance of the deep buoyancy engine and the glider energy consumption and efficiency.
