Abstract :
Fluid couplings have been used for over 65 years in fixed and variable speed drives; for fixed speed drives to get the maximum performance from a squirrel caged rotor, provide acceleration and stalling control and to prevent shock loads being transmitted in either direction; for variable speed drives to provide the above facilities, together with variable speed for energy saving. It is clear that matching a machine´s speed and performance to a process or system´s varying requirements will provide energy savings, but if variable speed is justifiable, what system should be used? The purpose of this paper is to show that even in today´s electronically driven world the advantages of the fluid coupling should still be considered
