Abstract :
Metal-oxide surge arresters have dynamic characteristics which are significant for overvoltage coordination studies involving the fast front surges. This paper describes an operating analysis of the metal oxide surge arrester same IEEE model, Pinceti model, Popov model and a proposed model which is adequate for very fast rate of the rise of surge currents. The paper presents the application of surge arresters as switching overvoltage protection circuit breakers and due to surge protection. Based on an ATP/EMTP, simulation is performed to show the effectiveness of the surge arrester in reducing circuit breaker TRVs and in minimizing the probability of circuit breaker re-strikes. Several models with an acceptable accuracy have been proposed to simulate this frequency-dependent behavior. Difficulties arise in the calculation and adjustment of the model parameters.
