Abstract :
The author presents a classification scheme for the inverter-driven PM (permanent-magnet) motor drive, by which the drive can be characterized according to five basic criteria. These criteria include motor design, power-circuit configuration, commutation control signals, current regulation, and motor control methods. This classification scheme provides a useful conceptual framework for comparing different PM motor drives. Several examples of PM motor drives are taken from the literature to illustrate the classification scheme.<>
