Abstract
This paper describes the advantages introduced by wavelength conversion in the design, implementation and management of future WDM optical networks and nodes. We describe the routing and wavelength assignment process in a WDM network and then we will demonstrate the major advantages introduced by wavelength conversion, mainly regarding the dimensioning aspects but also including considerations on the physical and management issues.
