Abstract :
The recent developments in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems in telecommunication networks have given rise to the need for fast tunable optical filters for dynamic tuning of the received or transmitted wavelengths in these systems. In this paper a tunable liquid crystal Fabry-Perot filter utilizing a novel high birefringence nematic liquid crystal has been demonstrated. The filter has a wide tuning range of 142.2 nm around /spl lambda/=1450 nm, with a full range tune-on time of 520 /spl mu/s and tune-off time of 6.6 ms.
