Abstract
A method is presented for the evaluation of the improvement of machine reliability made possible by monitoring systems. General methods of cost-benefit analysis are applied to investigate the financial viability of such systems. Estimates are given for the reliability improvement of large machines with monitoring systems. Two case studies are presented where the financial viability of monitoring systems are investigated.<>
