Abstract :
The authors propose that allegedly unilateral autonomic stimulation by certain ´vagal maneuvers´ triggers amphotropic HR control menus involving sympathetical nonreciprocal response. In a young adult at physical rest, the vagal motor nucleus appears to be subject to ´sliding capture´ by the actual prominent, e.g. input, auto-oscillating respiratory/reticular neurons, various reflex afferences or higher centers, as weighted by posture, receptor stimulation, or cortical status. Reciprocal dynamics of the respiratory and lowest band of RR interval spectrum from slow waves sleep to REM points to an useful discriminant in automatic sleep stage scoring.<>
