Abstract :
After extensive system planning studies, a 500-kV and 230-kV transmission project, designated the Sunrise Powerlink Project, was proposed by SDG&E and approved by the CAISO to add a third independent import path to SDG&E´s service territory. System reliability, renewable energy access, and economics, were comprehensively evaluated, supporting the purpose and need for the project. A public outreach process involved stakeholders in the identification and selection of the transmission line route. Extensive engineering studies were undertaken to establish a design criteria and types of construction that cost-effectively meet project objectives with the lowest possible environmental impact. While the CPUC review of the project is being completed, final design and planning for procurement and construction continues to support a late 2010 in-service date.
