Abstract :
Utilities charge large industrial customers both for the energy utilized and for the maximum usage over a period of time which is either preset or instantaneous (the demand charge). To control the demand charge, electric furnace steel companies have installed demand limiters to decrease excessive peaking of energy usage. The author examines the different types of demand limiters, the procedures for analyzing energy usage within an electric furnace shop, and methods for predicting and utilizing the delays caused by demand limiting.<>
