Abstract :
This study reports on the implementation of a real-time speech visualisation application, SpeechCanvas, which focuses specifically on providing on-screen text and visual prompts to assist speakers in correctly pronouncing short-duration speech sounds such as /p/ and /t/. When tested on a group of Arabic speakers having difficulties distinguishing between /p/ and /b/ in their pronunciation, those speakers that used SpeechCanvas - in comparison with another speech visualization application - recorded a 14.2% improvement in pronunciation of the target phone pair.
