Abstract :
The influence of O2-Hb kinetics and the Fahraeus effect on gas transport in the microcirculation was investigated in the steady state using a multicompartmental model for O2-CO2 coupled transport in the cat brain microcirculation. Results suggest that the influence of O2-Hb reaction kinetics on oxygen transport is characterized by two major features: the difference-at the same Po2-between the actual capillary O2-Hb saturation and the equilibrium O2-Hb saturation, and an increase in the value of venous Po2 predicted by the model. The Fahraeus effect results in a Po2 increase in the vein and venules and a Po2 decrease in the tissue and arterioles. The two mechanisms enhance each other. Their interaction is more significant during ischemia
