Abstract :
The Basis Element Method (BEM) is an efficient computational method that can be used to calculate the 3-D temperature field in biological tissue undergoing hyperthermia treatment. Although the finite element method (FEM) is capable of calculating accurate hyperthermia temperature fields, the need for a rapid method that can be used interactively by clinicians for treatment planning, and in real-time to control treatment delivery has prompted the creation of the BEM. This paper compares the accuracy of the BEM and the FEM and discusses advantages of using the BEM for hyperthermia calculations
