Abstract
Automated processes often require that the control systems have access to information concerning each part or part carrier in the system. Systems for providing such information are commonly called carrier memory, mobile memory or escort memory systems. The author addresses several different escort memory technologies, in particular bar coding, their strong and weak points and implementation considerations. Techniques for selecting an appropriate type of escort memory are presented.<>
