Abstract :
The author gives simple rules for the protection of a small computer system (200 VA to 800 VA, 120 V RMS, 60 Hz) from disturbances on the mains. It is recommended that all systems be protected from transient overvoltages by metal-oxide varistors, since overvoltages can damage electronic equipment. If a system is also susceptible to malfunction by common changes in RMS voltage, the addition of a line conditioner and possibly a standby uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is also recommended. If a system´s operation is critical, the combination of varistors, line conditioner, and a standby UPS is recommended.<>
