Abstract :
Novel avalanche photodiodes (APD) working in a self-limiting mode of operation are tested. This mode provides for stable operation of a conductor-resistor-semiconductor (CRS) APD with a gain of 104-105. Based on test results, an improved APD design is suggested to provide a very high quantum efficiency across a broad wavelength spectrum. The concept of a compact positron emission tomography (PET) device based on Lu2SiO5:Ce (LSO) scintillating crystals and CRS APD is discussed. A point spread function with RMS of about 0.5 mm is predicted for a 18F tracer isotope
