Abstract
The DC corona current-voltage characteristics of coaxial cylindrical configurations with straight and helical wires are studied. Oscillograms describing the spatial development of streamers from helical and straight wires are recorded under fast, high-voltage pulses. These streamers proceed from the discharge wire (helical or straight) toward the outer cylinder. This is done to understand the role played by helical wires in improving the conversion efficiency of zone generators. A parametric study is carried out to investigate how the I-V characteristics and the streamer oscillograms are influenced by the pitch of the discharge wire as well as by the diameter of the outer cylinder. The results are discussed and correlated with the discharge physics.<>
