  • Abstract
    We have demonstrated an ultra-compact, highly efficient mode transformation between a highly confined active waveguide and a well-confined passive waveguide using conventional fabrication and single epitaxial growth. The mode is transformed over a taper 100 μm long and with a low round trip mode transformation loss of 0.3 dB. This scheme provides an attractive platform technology for monolithic integration of various active and passive devices, like splitters with amplifiers, Mach-Zehnder interferometers etc
