Abstract
An overview of the future role of fiber optics in improving the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) characteristics of shipboard radioelectronic equipment is presented. It is emphasized that the optical fiber will become the dominant carrier for shipboard interior communications. Some practical applications of optical fiber are presented. It is noted that the development of new fibers with theoretical loss values of less than 0.001 dB is an important area where rapid progress is being made
