Abstract
The in vivo MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) evaluation of signal intensity changes may offer the possibility to obtain tissue characterization of normal and pathological tissues. T1 and T2 weighted images need to be acquired to perform such evaluation. Clinical applications include differentiation of brain and orthopedic tumors. Liver masses can be differentiated according to signal intensity observed in benign masses, (cyst and hemangioma) as compared to malignant lesions, with high degree of accuracy. Limitations of in vivo tissue characterization are the low spatial resolution of MR images and statistical errors induced by equipment. MR in vivo spectroscopy of phosphorus might improve tissue characterization.<>
