Abstract :
The inherent high brightness of modern HID (high-intensity discharge) light sources has introduced an element of glare from lighting units that can seriously affect the operating efficiency and visual well being of warehouse workers. This problem is intensified by the requirement of high-angle light output from luminaires, if economical spacings are to be achieved in warehouse aisle situations. The creation of a refractor-reflector assembly to provide shielding to protect workers from painful brightness when looking up while situated under lighting units has significantly reduced glare from HID warehouse luminaires with asymmetric distributions. It also makes their broad application a practical reality, even at lower mounting heights.<>
