Abstract
The techniques for estimating the reliability of received data frames in a digital communication link are investigated. Attention is given to those methods that use only the side information created during the decoding of the coded-modulation scheme employed by the link. It is shown that improved accuracy in estimation can be obtained by processing properly normalized decoder metrics. The performance of an ARQ scheme that uses the new criterion for estimation of errors is compared to one that uses an error detection code. For this purpose, two types of coded-modulation schemes, a short block code and a 256-state trellis code utilizing M-ary differential phase shift keying (DPSK) symbols, are considered
