Abstract :
The author presents a matrix guideline, used to compare the safety value of existing control circuit options to new options. Programmable controllers, instrument distributed control systems, front-end controllers, and microcomputers have been compared to electromechanical relays to clarify the microcomputer-type controllers´ levels of safety responsibility. The matrix will assist people knowledgeable in safety and electromechanical relay application, but not familiar with current microcomputer technology, to choose the appropriate system configuration for risk-related applications.<>
