Possible approaches to satisfy the increasing demand of transmission bandwidth are electrical time-division multiplex (ETDM) and wavelength-division multiplex (WDM). This contribution covers major aspects of those systems. Experimental results are presented for a 40 Gbit/s ETDM system and a 32×20 Gbit/s WDM system
