Abstract :
Request (i.e., call) dropping probability of a UMTS cell improves drastically if some WLAN bandwidth is consumed to handle the blocked requests of UMTS. But the request admission control (RAC) requires a new air interface on the reserved WLAN spectrum to handle the blocked requests of UMTS. Thus, it prevents the implementation of WLAN hotspots using commercial WLAN standards. We propose a modified RAC scheme in which all requests are handled with same priority without reserving any WLAN spectrum. The model not only facilitates easy deployment of WLAN hotspots for UMTS operator, but also provides better performance at higher traffic load.
