Abstract :
Due to wide range of advantages of polymer optical fiber (POF), POFs are now utilised as basic material to fabricate optical splitter. In order to produce the economical device, the splitter has been fabricated by the homemade fusion technique. Red LED with 650 nm wavelength has been emitted through the splitter for the purpose of characterization to determine the power efficiency of the splitter. The parameters, such as optical output power, POFs´ attenuation characteristics and power losses on the network were all observed. The goal of this study is to analyse the improvement of power efficiency of the handmade optical splitter after the homemade fusion technique has been improvised. The splitter, whose maximum power efficiency could initially be reached up to 40%, then improved increasingly with the increase of 20% through improvised fusion skills. This paper highlights that the great effectiveness of homemade fusion technique might lead to the production of low-cost POF-based optical splitter with high-efficiency.
