Abstract
Usable Multimedia Applications is the title of the special session at ICMCS´99 that covers issues related to the development of usable multimedia applications that can facilitate users´ comprehension and interaction with the information being presented. Evaluation problems are addressed, with a special focus on usability, which represents a significant aspect of the overall quality of any multimedia application. Models, principles, and guidelines of good design are discussed. The role of design cannot be neglected: the quality of the development process and of the resulting products are largely affected by the quality of design. In this sense, design and evaluation are strongly interrelated
