Abstract :
Particular interest is presently focused on the full electric direct propulsion systems for the improvement of reliability and reduction of noise. A transverse flux permanent magnet (TFPM) machine with high pole-number and multi-phase configuration is one of the most suitable designs in such application so far as its high power production potential. In view of practical limitations of space and mass, a modular multiphase TFPM which has very good characteristics in terms of efficiency, high force density and control simplicity is developed in this paper. With combined stator and concentrating flux rotor configurations the complexity of manufacture and the cost of machine are dramatically reduced. The variable speed operation of 1.5 kW prototype machine is discussed, built and tested. The calculation and experimental results of the prototype are provided to verify the proposed design.
