Abstract :
There are several issues to be resolved when the legacy ATM switch is applied as a forwarding engine for the label switching router (LSR). They are mostly due to inconsistency between the requirements for the current and future Internet and capabilities of most of legacy ATM switches. This paper clarifies issues in constituting ATM-based LSR (ATM-LSR) networks as the Internet backbone, label resource consumption, effect of IP routing loop, support of quality/class of services, and finally desirable solutions for them
