  • Abstract
In this paper we extend a joint source/channel coding scheme (syntax based error concealment (SBEC)) for MPEG2 compressed video, over noisy channels. The extension is called syntax and discontinuity based error concealment (SDBEC) which uses a smoothness criteria in the uncompressed domain to improve the concealment. SDBEC´s PSNR and subjective performance is much better than SBECs down to Bit Error Rates (BERs) of 10-4. This improvement comes at the cost of complexity. The effect of slice size on SBEC and SDBEC is studied and it is shown that reduced slice size improves picture quality and decreases complexity at higher BER´s
