Abstract
We present a syntactic method for handwritten numeral recognition using the concept of fuzzy logic. We develop a fuzzy expert system that is capable of handling vagueness in describing each class of numerals. The proposed expert system consists of two main parts. First, the preprocessing part includes the feature extraction step that provides sufficient information to the inference engine. Second, the inference engine applies the suitable set of fuzzy rules and aggregates them towards the final decision. By imitating the human brain in its decision making process, the proposed system was implemented using a small set of rules. It also exhibits robustness in handling uncertain information
