Abstract
A static output nonlinear controller, that is a polynomial in nonlinear states, is presented for limiting the peak dynamic response of nonlinear structures subject to near-field earthquakes. The performance of the nonlinear controller is demonstrated using an 8-story building equipped with various hybrid control systems and subject to near-field earthquakes, such as Northridge and Kobe earthquakes. Numerical results indicate that (i) the static output nonlinear controller is effective in reducing the peak response of building structures, and (ii) under near-field earthquakes, effective control devices should be investigated for protecting buildings
