Abstract :
A new design of a novel AC regulator is described. Two electronic transformers (ETRs) are connected in series with the AC mains to provide a regulated AC output voltage. One of the ETRs handles the decremental part of the normal AC input voltage, while the other handles the incremental part. Transformer-isolated coupled-inductor Cuk power converters are used to implement the ETRs. The size of the overall circuit is small as the two ETRs are operated at a high switching frequency and the overall efficiency of the regulator can be maintained very high since the power dissipation in the two ETRs is small compared with the total power in the load. The four-quadrant nature of the AC-to-AC electronic transformer also enables it to accept reactive load. An experimental AC regulator has been built. Good line and load regulations are achieved. The efficiency is about 88%
