Abstract
The paper describes a knowledge based system that employs fuzzy set techniques to analyze train movements and to help dispatchers guide the train in the best possible way. The system uses decision procedures based on operational rules derived from experience and practical constraints. Tested at a major iron ore railway, the system has shown to be an effective tool to enhance dispatcher´s decision making ability. This means cost effective transportation, higher production rate, and smoother, safer operation
