Abstract :
A byte error is also called a b-bit byte error when a byte consists of b bits. The authors abbreviate `t-fold b-bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)´ as t-bEC (or t-bED), `t-fold unidirectional b-bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)´ as t-UbEC (or t-UbED), and `all-unidirectional-error-detecting´ as AUED, t-bEC/d(⩾t)-bED Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, which include shortened and lengthened RS codes, are capable of t-UbEC/d-UbED, but RS codes are not fit for control of the predominant errors in byte-organized computer memories, i.e., unidirectional byte errors. They propose a construction of t-UbEC/d-UbED codes and given a large number of more efficient codes than the t-bEC/ d-bED RS codes for b=4 to 8. Efficient encoding schemes remain to be investigated for the inner codes of the proposed construction
