Abstract :
In this conference paper, the authors begin by considering why problems persist in the software development and systems acquisition arena despite the existence of known solutions. Then, the paper shifts focus to describe key elements in systems thinking, and proceeds with an example of an Acquisition Archetype on Firefighting. This archetype is illustrated in an actual scenario, and guidance is provided on both breaking and preventing counterproductive dynamics. Finally, the paper presents implications and directions for the future-for research and for the use of archetypes in the field.
